Hostess with the mostess

British Retro - 1950's Dresses and PartiesI’m all for a decent cocktail party, and by decent I mean a buzzing vibe, good music and a room full of guests who’ve made an effort. Emptying ashtrays and removing traces of Cherries in the Snow from the rim of my best shot glasses is a small price to pay for what is surely the most civilized way to get mortal drunk. I like to be the hostess with the mostess, too, aiming for a blend of Holly Golightly’s stylishly chaotic house party and an impromptu gathering at the Cal Neva Lodge with a few crooners, an off-duty president and a poodle call Maff…

Alas, I know we were all born too late, but that’s not going to stop me from having the best vintage shindig I can. So, let’s kick off with my own personal spirit guide, Liz Taylor. She’ll be wearing Rhonda’s Revenge in that delightful, fresh magnolia orchid print, perfect for showing off glowing summer skin. She’ll breeze straight to the kitchen where she’ll mix up a chocolatini – a little drink she invented with Rock Hudson, dontcha know? 2 parts vodka, 2 parts kahlua and a splash of chocolate syrup; shake it up with ice and strain into a martini glass. Don’t forget to let your obnoxiously large diamonds catch the light as you raise that glass, darling!

Over at the cocktail cabinet I spy Bette Davis, all dark, dangerous curves in the Wanda pencil dress; the perfect gown for that unmistakable silhouette – classic and understated elegance. She’s after some gin to mix a few Gibsons (6 parts gin to 1 part dry vermouth, garnished with a pickled onion) and raising a perfectly arched brow as she scans the drinks cabinet. She’s far too classy to shake that cocktail shaker herself, but in that dress she’ll not want for willing helpers. Hand on hip and cigarette balanced in an upturned hand, she’s one classy dame.

The cool kids are perched on bar stools, and you know who I mean by cool kids, don’t you? Bogart and Bacall, naturally. They are sipping Scotch Mist from long glasses and enjoying intense, moody silences. She’s wearing ‘An Aztec Tale‘ dress, the sugar skulls an appropriate design for such a sultry evening; that halter back design shows off those toned shoulders, which are, as everyone knows, the sexiest erogenous zone. I figure a tall glass packed with crushed ice, a shot of Scotch and a twist of lemon should help keep things super cool.

Okay, maybe my parties aren’t graced with Hollywood’s finest, but if they were, I know exactly what those gorgeous gals would be wearing…
